Inverlochy Castle

Feb-25-2009 By admin

This imposing granite castle sits at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest of Scotland’s mountains. The castle’s view is to the jagged and dangerous, thousand-foot sheer drop cliffs on the north face of ‘the Ben’, snow-covered for much of the year. Sunrise view from summit of Ben Nevis. A few miles north of Fort William, just under 3 hours’ very scenic drive from both Edinburgh or Glasgow, elegant black and gold gates open the way to the winding drive through rhododendrons and woodland leading to the solid stone canopy of the castle’s portico with its angel finials.

Three Chimneys & House Over-By

Feb-25-2009 By admin

The Isle of Skye, or an t-Eilean Sgiathanach in Gaelic, is the winged isle; and it’s also Eilean a’ Cheo, the misty isle. It is certainly the first, and often the second. On this beautiful, interesting and undeniably romantic isle, it only takes a quick look into the restored croft museum at Colbost – next to this famous restaurant with rooms on the edges of Loch Dunvegan – to get a sense of how tough life was here until relatively recently. Not just hard: very hard: these people, our ancestors – how strong were they to survive? The feudal system saw the usual Highland polarities of poverty for the many and privilege for the few; croft and castle.

Old Course Hotel

Feb-25-2009 By admin

On February 26th this year this prominent hotel won The Scottish Hotel of the Year 2007 award, Scotland’s premier hotel distinction. It was also named the ‘World’s Leading Golf Resort’ at the World Travel Awards a couple of years ago, and holds an AA grading of 5 red stars, one of only a few in Scotland at this level. So it’s a very highly regarded place.

The nearby ancient and charming town of St. Andrews with its castle, cathedral and steep cliffs overlooking the sea, came to be well known thanks to a significant place in the history of religion, a 15th century University and (of course) ‘gowf’, or golf. Prince William happened lately to be resident here as he studied Art History, so that added a contemporary frisson.

Santa Barbara’s Canary Hotel

Feb-21-2009 By admin

Previously called the Andalucia, the Canary and its 97 rooms have been dressed up under the aegis of L.A. design virtuoso Michael Smith, who used his sense of easy glamour to bring an Alhambra-meets-Pacific look: the palette—an interplay of greens and blues, ranging from celery to indigo—takes its cue from the ocean (which sits three blocks to the west); dark oak floors are accented with rush mats or sorbet-hued dhurries (rather than wall-to-wall carpets); instead of bland wallpaper, hallways are now covered in a cheeky (but oh-so-chic) bright-turquoise burlap, set off by Moroccan lanterns. Even the lobby, with its terra-cotta floor and tapestries, positively radiates California warmth.

Check-in: High-design Hotels

Feb-21-2009 By admin

Architects from Frank Lloyd Wright to Ricardo Legorreta were once indelibly connected with the most important hotel projects of their day (the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, the Camino Real in Mexico City). Though the boutique-hotel era put the emphasis more on interiors, architects are again making their mark on hotel design.

L.A Hotel: SLS Beverly Hills

Feb-21-2009 By admin

Philippe Starck is bored with the boutique hotel. “I want a revolution,” claims the man who is one of the progenitors of the movement. “I want to give people experiences not through gimmicks, but with elegance and intelligence.” Starck is hoping to do just that by teaming up with Sam Nazarian, the force behind some of L.A.’s most buzzy venues, including Katsuya, a Japanese-fusion restaurant that is a T+L 2008 Design Award winner. Their project: the $230 million SLS Beverly Hills, slated to open in October. Nazarian wants SLS to hit the sweet spot between a trendy boutique hotel and a formal five-star establishment; along with Starck, he’s enlisted a team of industry innovators to help him achieve this vision.

Best New Green Hotels

Feb-21-2009 By admin

Becoming a LEED-certified hotel is quite a feat, especially when you consider that there are only 1,900 buildings—and we’re not just talking hotels here—around the globe that have met the conditions and necessary standards for true green certification.

Without asking guests to do away with luxuries or amenities, these hotels found a way to provide them while still keeping the environment in mind. Want proof? California’s Venice Beach Eco Cottages features organic linens and custom—and surprisingly chic—décor accented with reclaimed objects and recycled materials (think birdcages, old-fashioned milk jugs).

From the comfort of HRH hotels room, watch the sun burst through a curtain of crimson, swirling across the drowsy dawn sky above Udaipur massive citadel. Four centuries old, it looks exactly as a palace should: immense, impressive, imposing - the very picture of majesty. Yet we hardly suffer in its shadow. Munching grapes and dates, we snuggle on exquisitely embroidered pillows by the bay windows of the HRH hotels. We feel like king and queen—appropriate because this 250-year-old palace has always served royalty. And we have been on Cloud Nine since checking into our capacious, chandelier-bedecked suite, once the sitting room of a princess.
